Goal: learn 10 words and phrases for understanding simple headlines.
Before you start
This level assumes the elementary level and elementary grammar. From here on, words are in kanji with their reading above; in the reading round you'll see the kanji alone.
What you learn
Japanese headlines save words: they often end in a noun, without です or a verb (えきで じこ «accident at the station»).
Words
You practise them in kana; underneath you can see how they are usually written.
- 事件jikenincident, case
- 事故jikoaccidentThere is also じこ = 自己 (oneself). Here you learn 事故, an accident.
- 記事kiji(news) articleThere is also きじ = 生地 (fabric, dough). Here you learn 記事, a news article.
- 情報jouhouinformation
- 発表happyouannouncement, presentation
- 政府seifugovernment
- 選挙senkyoelection
- 原因genincause
- 結果kekkaresult

Practice
Two rounds: first you read each word and type its romaji, then you pick what it means. No romaji on screen.
Reading in context
A short text with words and grammar you already know; kanji carry their reading above. Read it and answer.
A headline on a newspaper website:
駅で 事故が ありました。
eki de jiko ga arimashita.
What happened?
Translation
There has been an accident at the station.
