Katakana · lesson 1 of 12

K01 · Vowels and K row

Goal: read 2 words with ア イ ウ エ オ カ キ ク ケ コ.

Before you start

Nothing else needed: this is the first lesson.

New kana

Katakana is mostly used for words from other languages, names and signs. Each kana sounds like its hiragana partner: ア = あ, カ = か.

Look at their shape and reading. If in doubt, check the katakana chart (gojūon).

Trace practice

Go over the shape with your finger, mouse or a stylus. It is free practice: it does not count towards passing the lesson.

Words

You practise them in kana; underneath you can see how they are usually written.

Practice

Two rounds: first you read each word and type its romaji, then you pick what it means. No romaji on screen.

Reading in context

A short text written only with the kana and grammar you already know. Read it and answer.
