Katakana · lesson 2 of 12

K02 · S row

Goal: read 3 words with サ シ ス セ ソ.

Before you start

This lesson assumes what you saw in the earlier ones. If something feels shaky, go back to it:

New kana

シ and ツ look alike: in シ the short strokes sit one above the other and the long one rises from the bottom; in ツ they sit side by side and the long one falls from the top. ツ comes in the next lesson.

Look at their shape and reading. If in doubt, check the katakana chart (gojūon).

Trace practice

Go over the shape with your finger, mouse or a stylus. It is free practice: it does not count towards passing the lesson.

Words

You practise them in kana; underneath you can see how they are usually written.

Practice

Two rounds: first you read each word and type its romaji, then you pick what it means. No romaji on screen.

Reading in context

A short text written only with the kana and grammar you already know. Read it and answer.
