Intermediate grammar (≈ N3) · lesson 4 of 20

GI04 · So as not to: 〜ないように

Goal: say what you do to avoid something (6 example sentences).

Before you start

The sentences use words you already know, up to the intermediate level, in kanji with furigana, and assume elementary grammar.

This lesson assumes what you saw in the earlier ones. If something feels shaky, go back to it:

What you learn

〜ないように、〜

ように after the ない-form says what you want to avoid: わすれないように、ノートに かきます (I write it down so I won't forget). Unlike ために, it goes with things you don't fully control (forgetting, putting on weight, being late).

Examples

Practice

Two rounds: first you pick what each sentence means; then you complete it with the missing form.

Reading in context

A short text with words and grammar you already know; kanji carry their reading above. Read it and answer.

A note on the fridge:

ゴミの 日ひを わすれないように!

  1. What is the note for?
