Upper intermediate (≈ N2) · lesson 1 of 5

IA01 · Economy

Goal: learn 10 words and phrases for understanding economic news.

Before you start

This level assumes the intermediate level and intermediate grammar. Words are in kanji with furigana, and the notes explain their register: which belong to the press and documents and which to conversation.

What you learn

At this level there are two registers: two-kanji words for the press and reports (上昇, 低下) and native verbs for speaking (上がる, 下がる). Learn both.

Words

You practise them in kana; underneath you can see how they are usually written.

Practice

Two rounds: first you read each word and type its romaji, then you pick what it means. No romaji on screen.

Reading in context

A short text with words and grammar you already know; kanji carry their reading above. Read it and answer.

On the TV news:

物価ぶっかが 上昇じょうしょうして います。輸入ゆにゅうの やさいが たかく なりました。

  1. What is happening to prices?

  2. What has become more expensive?
