Intermediate (≈ N3) · lesson 5 of 20

IN05 · Technology

Goal: learn 12 words and phrases for talking about devices and faults.

Before you start

This level assumes the elementary level and elementary grammar. From here on, words are in kanji with their reading above; in the reading round you'll see the kanji alone.

This lesson assumes what you saw in the earlier ones. If something feels shaky, go back to it:

What you learn

こしょう (breakdown) and しゅうり (repair) go together: こしょうしました (it broke down), しゅうりに いきます (I'll take it for repair). Watch the homophones: きかい is also 機会 (opportunity).

Words

You practise them in kana; underneath you can see how they are usually written.

Practice

Two rounds: first you read each word and type its romaji, then you pick what it means. No romaji on screen.

Reading in context

A short text with words and grammar you already know; kanji carry their reading above. Read it and answer.

A classmate arrives late:

パソコンが 故障こしょうしました。あした 修理しゅうりに いきます。

  1. What's wrong with the computer?

  2. What will he do tomorrow?
