Katakana · lesson 6 of 12

K06 · R row

Goal: read 7 words with ラ リ ル レ ロ.

Before you start

This lesson assumes what you saw in the earlier ones. If something feels shaky, go back to it:

New kana

As in hiragana, the Japanese r is a quick tap of the tongue. In foreign words it stands for both r and l (ホテル, hotel).

Look at their shape and reading. If in doubt, check the katakana chart (gojūon).

Trace practice

Go over the shape with your finger, mouse or a stylus. It is free practice: it does not count towards passing the lesson.

Words

You practise them in kana; underneath you can see how they are usually written.

Practice

Two rounds: first you read each word and type its romaji, then you pick what it means. No romaji on screen.

Reading in context

A short text written only with the kana and grammar you already know. Read it and answer.

The sign on a building:

ホテル

  1. What building is it?
