G17 · Ongoing: 〜て います

Before you start

The sentences only use words you already know from hiragana, katakana and the beginner level.

This lesson assumes what you saw in the earlier ones. If something feels shaky, go back to it:

What you learn

〜て います

The て-form + います expresses an ongoing action: いま ほんを よんで います (I'm reading a book now). Don't confuse this います with «there is» (G13): here it follows a verb in the て-form.

Examples

Practice

Two rounds: first you pick what each sentence means; then you complete it with the missing form.

A short text written only with the kana and grammar you already know. Read it and answer.

「いま しゅくだいを して います」

  1. What is the son doing?
