E16 · Directions

Goal: learn 10 words and phrases for asking for and giving directions.

Before you start

This level assumes the beginner level and basic grammar. Words you already met are marked and do not count as new.

This lesson assumes what you saw in the earlier ones. If something feels shaky, go back to it:

What you learn

With まがる and わたる, the place you pass through takes を: しんごうを まがります (turn at the lights), みちを わたります (cross the street). The direction takes に: みぎに まがります.

Words

You practise them in kana; underneath you can see how they are usually written.

Practice

Two rounds: first you read each word and type its romaji, then you pick what it means. No romaji on screen.

Reading in context

A short text written only with the kana and grammar you already know. Read it and answer.

A neighbour explains how to get to the station:

まっすぐ いきます。しんごうを みぎに まがります。

  1. Where do you turn, and which way?
