K08 · Dakuten and handakuten
Goal: read 9 words with dakuten (゛) and handakuten (゜).
Before you start
This lesson assumes what you saw in the earlier ones. If something feels shaky, go back to it:
New kana
- ガga
- ギgi
- グgu
- ゲge
- ゴgo
- ザza
- ジji
- ズzu
- ゼze
- ゾzo
- ダda
- ヂji
- ヅzu
- デde
- ドdo
- バba
- ビbi
- ブbu
- ベbe
- ボbo
- パpa
- ピpi
- プpu
- ペpe
- ポpo
They work as in hiragana: ゛ voices the sound (カ → ガ, ハ → バ) and ゜ turns the H row into p (ハ → パ).
Look at their shape and reading. If in doubt, check the dakuten section of the katakana chart.
Trace practice
Go over the shape with your finger, mouse or a stylus. It is free practice: it does not count towards passing the lesson.
Words
You practise them in kana; underneath you can see how they are usually written.
- パンpanbread
- バスbasubus
- テレビterebitelevision
- パソコンpasokoncomputer (PC)
- スペインsupeinSpain
- バナナbananabanana
- ピアノpianopiano

Practice
Two rounds: first you read each word and type its romaji, then you pick what it means. No romaji on screen.
Reading in context
A short text written only with the kana and grammar you already know. Read it and answer.
The sign at a stop in the street:
バス
basu
What is the stop for?
Translation
Bus.
