Katakana · lesson 9 of 12

K09 · Long vowel ー

Goal: read 8 words with the long vowel ー.

Before you start

This lesson assumes what you saw in the earlier ones. If something feels shaky, go back to it:

New kana

In katakana a long vowel is written with a dash, ー, which lengthens the vowel before it: コーヒー is read koohii. In romaji we double the vowel.

Trace practice

Go over the shape with your finger, mouse or a stylus. It is free practice: it does not count towards passing the lesson.

Words

You practise them in kana; underneath you can see how they are usually written.

Practice

Two rounds: first you read each word and type its romaji, then you pick what it means. No romaji on screen.

Reading in context

A short text written only with the kana and grammar you already know. Read it and answer.
