Basic grammar · lesson 25 of 35

G25 · Because and but: から, が

Goal: give reasons and add «but» (6 example sentences).

Before you start

The sentences only use words you already know from hiragana, katakana and the beginner level.

This lesson assumes what you saw in the earlier ones. If something feels shaky, go back to it:

What you learn

〜ですから、〜/〜ですが、〜

After a clause, から gives the reason: さむいですから、コーヒーを のみます (as it's cold, I drink coffee). が adds a «but»: たかいですが、おいしいです. Don't confuse this から with 〜てから (G19, «after»).

Examples

Practice

Two rounds: first you pick what each sentence means; then you complete it with the missing form.
