GI20 · Hearsay: 〜そうです
Goal: pass on what you've heard or read (6 example sentences).

What you learn
〜そうです
- そうI hear that
そうです after the plain form passes on what you've heard or read. Nouns take だ: あめだそうです (they say it'll rain). Don't confuse it with the そう of GE04, attached to the stem (ふりそう: looks like rain).
Examples
- 明日は 雨だそうです。ashita wa ame da sou desu. They say it'll rain tomorrow.
- 部長は 会社を 辞めるそうです。buchou wa kaisha o yameru sou desu. They say the boss is leaving the company.
- 新しい レストランは 高いそうです。atarashii resutoran wa takai sou desu. They say the new restaurant is expensive.
- 来週は 台風だそうです。raishuu wa taifuu da sou desu. They say there's a typhoon next week.
- 人口が 減ったそうです。jinkou ga hetta sou desu. They say the population has fallen.
- 温泉は 無料だそうです。onsen wa muryou da sou desu. They say the hot spring is free.
Practice
Two rounds: first you pick what each sentence means; then you complete it with the missing form.
Reading in context
A short text with words and grammar you already know; kanji carry their reading above. Read it and answer.
A friend comments on the forecast:
あしたは 台風だそうです。
ashita wa taifuu da sou desu.
What has she heard?

They say there's a typhoon tomorrow.
